# Learning Objectives

Embark on a thrilling journey with our German program! Master the language, explore the culture, and become a confident communicator in German - all in one exciting, enriching package.

## Five Goals

Our German program aims to help you hit five key goals, all rolled into everything we do.

1. Mastering German: Each of our courses will help you get better at reading, writing, speaking, and listening in German. Some courses focus on improving your language skills and understanding of grammar, while others use German while teaching different subjects. It's all about practice and putting your language skills to use. Actively learn vocabulary and keep a handy word list, either in a notebook or on your phone. Keep revising and using new words. Don't forget to use grammar notes from your language courses, and spend a chunk of your day thinking and communicating in German. Practice makes perfect!
2. Understanding German Texts: German studies aren't just about reading literature; it's about understanding everyday communication, history, and culture too. But, reading and discussing various texts is a fantastic way to improve your language skills. Literature also gives you a peek into different moments in German history, which can help you understand and connect better with Germans today. Plus, it helps build critical thinking, super important for any learning journey!
3. Info-Savvy in German: Great communication isn't just about speaking a language well; it's also about what you're sharing. Being able to find, understand, and present accurate information is crucial. After all, we're in the age of information overload! As part of your German studies, you'll learn how to filter and use this information, making you a confident communicator in German.
4. Understanding German Culture: When we talk about "culture", we mean it all - from classic arts to everyday lifestyle and unwritten social norms. Learning about culture is a total experience. That's why spending time in Germany and participating in extra-curricular activities can give you a deep understanding of the German way of life.
5. Being Comfortable with German Culture: As a German student, you'll get loads of opportunities to interact with Germans and experience their culture, be it in the classroom, through activities, or even studying in Germany. All of these experiences will help you engage deeply with German culture and feel at home in it.

Remember, these goals aren't separate; they all tie together to give you a rich understanding of German language and culture, making your German learning journey exciting and rewarding!

# German Learning Hub

Embark on a German learning adventure, blending language courses with engaging cultural immersion, making learning fun and exciting both in and outside the classroom!

## Media & Culture <a href="#block-a4d77fa3dd9545a0a33343551dfe9410" id="block-a4d77fa3dd9545a0a33343551dfe9410"></a>

Learning German isn't just about textbooks, it's also about diving into German culture. Here's how you can do it:

1. **Music & Movies**: Get hooked to German music and films. Use platforms like Spotify and YouTube. Sing along to your favorite German songs - it's a fun way to learn!
2. **News**: Read online German newspapers and magazines. Google can help you find popular ones like Der Spiegel and Die Zeit.
3. **Books**: Try German books, or even translations of your favorites. Check out websites like Amazon.de or abebooks.com to find them.
4. **Radio & TV**: Listen to German radio stations online and watch German television like Deutsche Welle (viewable in the WLRC). Some news shows like Die Tagesschau offer slower versions, which can be helpful for beginners.
5. **Streaming Services**: Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime offer German-language movies and shows. Some even have German subtitles or are dubbed in German. You can also access a free Mediathek site for a broadcaster (such as ARD, ZDF, RTL, SAT1, 3SAT, or ProSieben). Paid German streaming is available through [youtv.de](http://youtv.de/).
6. **Apps**: Install apps like Zeit Online or DW on your phone or tablet for news updates in German.
7. **Social Networks**: Connect with German speakers online. It's a great way to practice your language skills.
8. **Change Your Settings**: Consider changing your phone or social media language settings to German. It's a cool daily immersion trick!

Remember, learning is best when you're enjoying yourself. Share what you learn with your friends, keep a German journal, and build a personal German vocabulary notebook. It's more fun to learn together!

1. **GRMN Courses**: KSU courses focus on things that are harder to learn by yourself, like German history, literature, and advanced grammar. Enjoy these subjects and connect them with German culture outside the class. You'll also get a chance to polish your formal writing and technical vocabulary. But remember, fun activities like music, movies, or casual chats in German are for your free time, not the main focus in class.
2. **Speaking Partner**: Stop by the World Language Resource Center to chat in German about anything that interests you. It's a great way to practice.
3. **Co-curricular Activities**: There are plenty of chances to use German outside the class. These help you practice speaking and listening and learn more about German life and culture. Plus, you'll meet students with the same goals as you.
   1. Join the [**Peer Buddy Program**](/explore/peer-buddy-program) and attach to a German speaking partner in the area.
   2. Attend the Kaffeestunde to practice your spoken German.
   3. Attend guest lectures and musical performances related to German on campus.
   4. Attend off-campus events and trips.
   5. Seek out international students from German-speaking countries and befriend them.
   6. Watch German films shown on campus, at Filmabend, or at the [**Atlanta Film Festival**](https://www.atlantafilmfestival.com/).
   7. Become active in the [Student Council](/explore/student-council).

# Academic Advising

KSU students benefit from planning their course of study in advance. Familiarize yourself with the course schedule templates below, according to your area of interest.

## First Year Students and Focus Areas <a href="#block-32fc92124125420490218aa8362baf9a" id="block-32fc92124125420490218aa8362baf9a"></a>

Incoming students must select a focus area or a major before they may enroll in courses. Focus Areas are not permanent, and they provide students with a flexible way to discover the right major.

To help you with your planning process, please see the following diagram, which depicts which courses you might want to take, depending on the focus area you select. Try to take all of the "core" courses and pick add-ons (marked with + signs) if you wish to focus in Business or STEM fields. You can use the diagram for your planning purposes if you wish (see [duplicating files in Figma](https://help.figma.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038511533-Duplicate-or-copy-files#:~:text=From%20an%20open%20file,-Duplicate%20a%20file\&text=Click%20file%20name%20to%20open,and%20the%20original%20file%27s%20location.)).

Note: foreign language study is possible in every focus area, as it is a General Education requirement. Sometimes, the DegreeWorks course scheduling system will flag students who enroll in their first language course. In almost all cases, this should be corrected with a **manual override** by the University Registrar (see also [What is a Focus Area?](https://advising.kennesaw.edu/college_advising_centers/owladvising/focus_area.php)).

KSU German Studies Majors graduate ahead of schedule with study and work abroad.
{% endhint %}

The Department of World Languages and Cultures offers a B.A. program in Modern Language & Culture, and German students have the option to specialize in German and another language. This program is dynamic, and offers students the opportunity to enroll in at home or abroad, earning credit hours at German learning institutes or through German work experiences. Majors diversify their knowledge and experience through a combination of general education coursework, free electives, language study, upper-division related studies courses, internships, and/or study abroad experiences. We recommend that students pursue study abroad each summer, schedules permitting.

# Advanced Courses

Unlock success in your German classes with these inclusive and engaging tips on class preparation, reading strategies, and active learning!

In your German classes, you'll get a handy guide that tells you what you'll learn and how you'll be graded. Read it well and keep it close. Remember, success comes with a positive mindset and doing your best.

## Be Ready

Be ready for class. Do your homework in a quiet place, free from distractions. Set time aside regularly to do homework. Think of it this way: for each credit, you'll need two hours of homework every week. So, a three-credit course means nine hours a week: three for class and six for homework. Remember, less time means less learning.

When you have reading homework, take your time. Write notes, think about the themes, and try to understand more than just the words. Reading often in German will help you a lot. Be thorough with your writing assignments and finish them on time. Check your own work before you turn it in. Use the required books, especially the ones on grammar and dictionaries. Keep a notebook, pen, pencil, calendar, and a folder for class materials. Maybe get a German-German dictionary someday.

Pay full attention in class. Turn off your phones and other gadgets. Come early, get set up, and start work on time. Be ready to work with your classmates and professors. Join group activities, communicate in German, and do your best. Remember, practice is key to mastering a language.

Some classes will have lectures. Come ready to take notes. Keep them organized and use them for review. Make friends with your classmates and professors. If you have questions or need help, visit your professors during their office hours. They're always ready to help.

Remember, class is just one way to learn German at KSU. Try to practice speaking, listening, and reading outside of class too.

## How to Read a Text

You'll read a lot in your German classes. Here are some tips:

1. Find a quiet place.
2. Give yourself enough time to read carefully.
3. Keep a steady pace. If you don't understand something, read it again before looking up words.
4. Be active while reading. Take notes and mark your texts.
5. Don't exhaust yourself. If you're too tired to concentrate, take a break.

## How to Annotate a Text

Don't be shy to write in your books. Your notes will always be with you this way. For non-fiction, mark the main points and summarize arguments. For fiction, list characters and track elements that you find interesting. Engage with the text, predict what will happen next, ask questions, or even imagine conversations with the characters. Mark unfamiliar words to look them up later.

# WLC 2306

WLC 2306: Voices of Dissent

## About the Seminar

This course offers a passport into the hidden world of dissent. Here, we bear witness to art’s extraordinary capacity to challenge tyranny and empower the persecuted. Together, we will trace a legacy of courage that still echoes, calling us to lives of freedom and fearless creativity. We will traverse the world's continents in this seminar, and give voice to non-canonical authors and artists of Europe, Central and South America, Africa, West Asia, and South and East Asia.

## Getting to Know Each Other

Next semester, your guide will be Dr. Dylan Goldblatt (Ph.D., Germanic Languages and Literatures; Graduate Certificate in Comparative Literature). Before coming to KSU, Dr. Goldblatt lived in Europe and Asia. He is also a researcher in the field of Law in Literature.

We are thrilled to hear about your interest in this first-of-its-kind academic journey into the modern history of artistic dissent. Explore this rich literary and artistic theme of resistance next semester, and learn to create and speak truth for yourself.

Sometimes students of German culture seek out non-fictional clips by and about the German-speaking world on YouTube. Alternatively, some North American audiences may seek to better understand their own culture to enhance their proficiency with another culture. Here are clips on various topics that are included for these purposes.

# Student Council

Representatives from Kennesaw German Studies courses meet and form the German Studies Student Council at Kennesaw State University.

### Roles and Responsibilities

The Council comprises representatives (*Kurssprecher:in*) from the German Studies courses.

* The course representatives represent the interests of the students in the course section.
* Representatives transmit ideas, suggestions, and requests from their classmates.&#x20;
* Representatives broadcast information and announcements to classmates.
* Representatives earn an academic incentive through their work. Upon successful completion of their duties, as determined by a vote of the council before the end of scheduled classes, the course representative is entitled to drop one graded activity from the the grade book (via exemption) for the course they represent that semester.

### Structure

Each member of the Council has voting rights on motions. The chairperson is the spokesperson for the council. The German Studies Student Council meets at least once per semester to discuss important matters and vote on motions. The Council may decide to invite extended participation in votes that impact the entire body of German Studies students.

The German Studies Student Council is designed to support self-governance for students in the German Studies program. The University System of Georgia (USG) announced in its [2024 Strategic Plan](https://www.usg.edu/strategic_plan/strategic_plan_goals/student_success) that Kennesaw State University should focus its efforts on improving Student Success.&#x20;

The following focus areas offer guidance to members of the German Studies Student Council:

* Suggestions for improving the learning experience
* Suggestions for German language tutoring
* Suggestions for organizing and operating Kaffeeklatsch

### Council Meeting Schedule

Each semester the Council meets at least once and additional meetings are at the discretion of the group. The first meeting is announced in advance through the course representatives in each section, and representatives may choose to invite all German Studies students to a meeting. Subsequent meetings are determined by the governance of the council and are announced in a similar fashion. Meetings will also be announced here.

For six weeks this semester you can serve as a "Peer Buddy" or "Suitemate" (you room with them in a hotel at no cost to you) to approximately two Germans your age, selected by our grant-funding partners, the Herz Foundation of Hamburg, Germany. In being their friend and KSU liaison, supported with guidelines and prompts to not make it awkward, you learn about each other’s personal and professional lives and about German and US American culture. No special knowledge is necessary - just a willingness to help these Germans practice English and make friends!

> A highlight of this program is the chance to meet up and talk to our peer buddies. The buddies are students of KSU and volunteered to talk to us online regularly. This weekly appointment with fixed topics quickly developed itself into great and personal talks. From the differences in healthcare in both Germany and the US to our favorite snacks we covered all kinds of topics already. The whole group of German participants is very happy about it and we all hope that, sooner or later, we can meet our buddies in person. > We welcomed our guest speaker, Vanya Allan, she is a multidisciplinary artist, designer, educator, and architecture student. \[...] She gave a lecture, which was very informative and rousing. She told us about the topic of racism, the language of the African Americans and about the code-switching. She has a specific role in organizing in the BLM movement, which supports African-American oppression. She also feels that Black Lives is the correct terminology and is not just for African American, but also affects all of humanity. > Finally, our virtual trip to the USA started and everybody was very excited and had lots of expectations. We are a team of 18 trainees from all over Germany and the organizing team, 1 from Hamburg, as well as two persons from Atlanta. Unfortunately, we can’t fly to Atlanta, but instead, we will meet virtually every Friday for the next 6 weeks to learn more about American culture, business, U.S. college life and current events. ## Experiential Learning

This is the key experience for students of German. KSU offers several ways to spend a semester or year in Germany. For students who take German culture and language seriously, study abroad is essential. Spending an academic year in Germany will help with your studies more than anything else. It is affordable and can fit into most students’ schedules with a bit of early planning. Talk to your German professors and the Education Abroad office to learn more.

Of course, students can complete a German major without this experience. But this situation is far from ideal. Studying abroad makes the culture come alive; an extended stay in a German-speaking environment makes speaking the language feel much more comfortable and natural. At graduation, many German majors reflect that studying abroad helped them grow as individuals and become independent like nothing ever before. More than anything else, study abroad will help you succeed in mastering German. It is essential.

## Pro Tips

Here are tips for making the most of your study abroad experience and using it to achieve your goals as a German major or minor - or simply a learner of German:

* View the experience as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to immerse yourself in another culture. Commit to speaking the German language whenever possible. Seek out friends who do the same, and make an effort to get to know Germans. This way, you can learn simply by living and socializing. The experience just might change your life.
* German university students have less daily homework than Americans. Use the down time to read and study in German what interests you. Remember to practice the principles of “active” learning described above in the section [**Learning Objectives**](/learn/learning-objectives). Also, use your time to explore the world and people around you (in German, of course!).
* Keep your email, Skype, Facebook, Instagram, and other contacts with people at home to a minimum. Don’t let your time abroad become just a virtual version of your life at home. Take full advantage of where you are.
* If you choose to travel, spend some significant time exploring the German-speaking countries.
* Welcome the opportunity to challenge yourself and grow while exploring another language, culture, and way of life. Recognize that you will have moments of homesickness and “culture shock.” These are normal and part of adjusting to a new culture. You will have wonderfully exhilarating moments too, especially if you make your best effort to explore and live in German.

## Culture Shock and Reverse Culture Shock

In this video, Ale Schiach and Dr. Sabine Smith of KSU German Studies delve into the intricate world of culture shock and reverse culture shock, phenomena that often shape the experiences of international students and travelers. In this exploration, we will unravel the complexities of adapting to a new cultural environment and the equally challenging process of readjusting to one's home culture upon return. Our focus will be on students preparing for study abroad in Germany, offering insights into how they can navigate and embrace these transformative experiences. Study abroad to Paderborn requires substantial planning in advance, but if you follow these simple steps, you will be fine and well-prepared. Note: You will need to discuss your plans with KSU German faculty, your academic Major Advisor, and KSU Education Abroad.

* **Timing**. Will you go abroad for a semester or a year? Note that German university schedules are *not* fall and spring, but rather winter and summer. For this reason, single semester exchange students should depart in Spring. Academic year exchange students should depart in Fall.

{% hint style="warning" %}
For one semester, leave in Spring. For two semesters, leave in Fall.
{% endhint %}

* **Financial Support**. In most cases, students will be able to apply their financial aid package from KSU toward their study abroad experience for an academic semester or year. Seek financial aid expertise from that office in order to clarify the terms of support. It is also important to take note of your recurring expenses in the US and wind them down.

{% hint style="info" %}
Set an appointment with a KSU Financial Aid advisor to clarify your support in advance.
{% endhint %}

* **Academic Advising**. In preparation for your study abroad experience, book appointments to meet with your German faculty advisor, your Education Abroad advisor, and any Academic Advisor that you have (for another major) at KSU. It is important to coordinate with these three parties so that you ensure the courses you take abroad fit into your plan to progress.

{% tab title="Projects" %}
Currently, Dr. Smith is recruiting students for the following OWLS-CARE projects:

**Leadership Skills as Career Competencies: Intentional Practice of Communication in Teams** &#x20;

This undergraduate research project explores how intentional practice of communication in teams supports critical leadership skills as career competencies. Student success in navigating project-based teamwork is of great interest to educators and employers. As demographics in local and international work environments diversify, there is need to learn and practice how we communicate with one another to get the job done. Our team/s of undergraduate researchers will prepare for a transnational seminar in Spring 2024 hosted at KSU by researching, proposing, and potentially implementing community-based projects. Project completion in teams will demonstrate the value of understanding and practicing critical communication skills as well as career competencies identified by [ACTFL](https://edtochangetheworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/21century_worldlanguagesmap.pdf) and [NACE](https://www.naceweb.org/uploadedFiles/files/2021/resources/nace-career-readiness-competencies-revised-apr-2021.pdf).&#x20;

# Building a LinkedIn

Creating a compelling Linkedin profile is essential! Your profile invites recruiters to examine your credentials and fit for positions, and your profile also provides basic information.

{% hint style="info" %}
This guide replicates professional advice shared by [Linkedin experts](https://www.linkedinguys.com/) in 2022.
{% endhint %}

## Checklist <a href="#block-2e30f244a85d43d89b927ded92bab2bd" id="block-2e30f244a85d43d89b927ded92bab2bd"></a>

* Do you have the perfect **profile photo** (headshot, smiling, correct attire)?
* Does your **headline** match your desired job title?
* Does your **summary** include both keywords + accomplishments?
* Does your work **experience** include your resume bullets?
* Does your **education** include your accomplishments outside of class?
* Do your skills match the desired **skills** on your dream job description?
* Do you have at least one **recommendation**?

## Profile Photo <a href="#block-daf7bd9feb43498cb53e7aab6999baa9" id="block-daf7bd9feb43498cb53e7aab6999baa9"></a>

Finding a stellar image for your Linkedin profile is critical, because recruiters and colleagues will see your contact data in a small format, so that image itself may be the only legible part of your profile in some instances!

* People love faces, so crop yours around your head & shoulders. Face forward with no one else in the frame.
* People love smiles - so make sure you have a genuine one.
* People love people like themselves - so match your desired industry’s dress code (e.g., casual for tech, formal for finance).

![](data:image/svg+xml,%3csvg%20xmlns=%27http://www.w3.org/2000/svg%27%20version=%271.1%27%20width=%27240%27%20height=%27362.00477326968974%27/%3e)![image](https://kennesaw.de/_next/image?url=https%3A%2F%2Fassets.super.so%2F4f2098f8-aad1-4d5b-be68-fc6fbcd07b1d%2Fimages%2Fb80e138e-b1b7-4f0c-baf7-2f73aa82d9cb%2FScreen_Shot_2022-05-19_at_8.02.48_PM.png\&w=640\&q=80)

## Headline <a href="#block-25164a6b680a4c37a5c31f8890d58e08" id="block-25164a6b680a4c37a5c31f8890d58e08"></a>

Recruiters search LinkedIn by position titles (for example: “Supply Chain Director,” “Product Marketing Manager,” “Translator”). So make sure that your headline reflects what you want them to discover you for:

* If you have experience with the job you want, feel free to use the actual job title.
* If you don’t have experience, you can add a modifier like “Aspiring Product Marketing Manager.”

![](data:image/svg+xml,%3csvg%20xmlns=%27http://www.w3.org/2000/svg%27%20version=%271.1%27%20width=%27240%27%20height=%27364.01913875598086%27/%3e)![image](https://kennesaw.de/_next/image?url=https%3A%2F%2Fassets.super.so%2F4f2098f8-aad1-4d5b-be68-fc6fbcd07b1d%2Fimages%2F3480b9df-9753-48b7-a54a-b13cca08e589%2FScreen_Shot_2022-05-19_at_8.02.57_PM.png\&w=640\&q=80)

## Summary <a href="#block-b555eeae8f08442dac82fe635bceee6a" id="block-b555eeae8f08442dac82fe635bceee6a"></a>

Your summary can do double duty for you. Linkedin employees advise that the usage of specific keywords makes it 40x more likely to be contacted about opportunities.

* Having the right keywords from your desired job description (e.g. SEO, PR, NLP) can get you discovered by recruiters.
* Listening significant and concrete accomplishments can make it easy for recruiters to pick you.

![](data:image/svg+xml,%3csvg%20xmlns=%27http://www.w3.org/2000/svg%27%20version=%271.1%27%20width=%27240%27%20height=%27362.85714285714283%27/%3e)![image](https://kennesaw.de/_next/image?url=https%3A%2F%2Fassets.super.so%2F4f2098f8-aad1-4d5b-be68-fc6fbcd07b1d%2Fimages%2F587b0b4d-3958-4460-a6d0-09e4fe4fac80%2FScreen_Shot_2022-05-19_at_8.03.04_PM.png\&w=640\&q=80)

## Experience <a href="#block-86c94beaefab4509a096d1e65eafd3ff" id="block-86c94beaefab4509a096d1e65eafd3ff"></a>

Most people assume they shouldn’t put their resume bullets online. This is a huge mistake for a few reasons. (And the only exception would be work performed under non-disclosure.)

* It means you can’t be found for all t he great keywords in the “Description” part of your profile (e.g. “positioning”).
* It also means that you can’t show off all the great, specific work that you’ve done.

![](data:image/svg+xml,%3csvg%20xmlns=%27http://www.w3.org/2000/svg%27%20version=%271.1%27%20width=%27240%27%20height=%27359.42857142857144%27/%3e)![image](https://kennesaw.de/_next/image?url=https%3A%2F%2Fassets.super.so%2F4f2098f8-aad1-4d5b-be68-fc6fbcd07b1d%2Fimages%2Fdfdb2efb-7e58-4e0e-993f-45b2c46b7ead%2FScreen_Shot_2022-05-19_at_8.03.12_PM.png\&w=640\&q=80)

## Education <a href="#block-6c17ee69a16247b3bf19431638c115ad" id="block-6c17ee69a16247b3bf19431638c115ad"></a>

Don’t assume employers only care about your degree. Savvy LinkedIn users know that what they did in school is just as important & says a lot about who they are. Include:

* Any jobs you held while enrolled.
* Extracurricular leadership.
* Volunteer duties (40% of employers say these are equal to paid work).
* Relevant courses, projects & publications (especially for new grads).

![](data:image/svg+xml,%3csvg%20xmlns=%27http://www.w3.org/2000/svg%27%20version=%271.1%27%20width=%27288%27%20height=%27436.1142857142857%27/%3e)![image](https://kennesaw.de/_next/image?url=https%3A%2F%2Fassets.super.so%2F4f2098f8-aad1-4d5b-be68-fc6fbcd07b1d%2Fimages%2F11972804-03bb-4820-8ade-4b0a22b6f20e%2FScreen_Shot_2022-05-19_at_8.03.20_PM.png\&w=640\&q=80)

## Skills <a href="#block-81ae9a3b9ff84e61b072cf5fd5ecd0eb" id="block-81ae9a3b9ff84e61b072cf5fd5ecd0eb"></a>

Most people just go with whatever random skills their friends have recommended for them. This can be optimized.

* Choose your own skills! Don’t waste a good opportunity to display the skills from your dream job description.
* Just don’t worry about endorsements - recruiters don’t care about them because they can be gamed.

![](data:image/svg+xml,%3csvg%20xmlns=%27http://www.w3.org/2000/svg%27%20version=%271.1%27%20width=%27288%27%20height=%27435.42857142857144%27/%3e)![image](https://kennesaw.de/_next/image?url=https%3A%2F%2Fassets.super.so%2F4f2098f8-aad1-4d5b-be68-fc6fbcd07b1d%2Fimages%2Fb4055ee3-74a6-4c44-9e8d-7e128708cccf%2FScreen_Shot_2022-05-19_at_8.03.27_PM.png\&w=640\&q=80)

## Recommendations <a href="#block-8ac6a9b4f68c4c9c926d9ea20bed8b1b" id="block-8ac6a9b4f68c4c9c926d9ea20bed8b1b"></a>

Unlike endorsements, recommendations do matter. Without them, recruiters have to take your word. It’s validation.

* Even one recommendation says “OK, this is someone you can trust.”
* Try to get at least one recommendation for each job you list (even if from a peer).

![](data:image/svg+xml,%3csvg%20xmlns=%27http://www.w3.org/2000/svg%27%20version=%271.1%27%20width=%27288%27%20height=%27434.0571428571428%27/%3e)![image](https://kennesaw.de/_next/image?url=https%3A%2F%2Fassets.super.so%2F4f2098f8-aad1-4d5b-be68-fc6fbcd07b1d%2Fimages%2F2aa2c1e1-8795-43d1-8fba-7affe43ea199%2FScreen_Shot_2022-05-19_at_8.03.33_PM.png\&w=640\&q=80)\ <br>

# Job Search (EU)

This resource provides up-to-date information about securing gainful employment in Germany. The advice available here has the endorsement of the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin.

## Survey the Market <a href="#block-380327dbc0f24929a1779caae906c3d1" id="block-380327dbc0f24929a1779caae906c3d1"></a>

The [Quick Check on the Make it in Germany website](https://www.make-it-in-germany.com/en/visa/quick-check/?quickcheckpreselect=Arbeiten) should indicate your chances of working in Germany. There is demand, among others, for doctors, nursing staff, engineers, mechatronic technicians, IT specialists and train drivers. Before you start looking for a job it is best to first clarify whether you need a visa to work in Germany.

## Prepare **your Qualifications** <a href="#block-bc87e826695744b8a81df9e66c911b14" id="block-bc87e826695744b8a81df9e66c911b14"></a>

For many jobs it can be useful and for some it is even necessary that vocational or educational qualifications from your home country are recognised in Germany. You can check whether this applies to you on the [Recognition in Germany](https://www.anerkennung-in-deutschland.de/html/en/) website.

## **Look for a Job** <a href="#block-eba125940c5d4556b2895524b6c37b5f" id="block-eba125940c5d4556b2895524b6c37b5f"></a>

The [job listings on the Make it in Germany website](https://www.make-it-in-germany.com/en/jobs/job-listings/?tx_vcjobs_list%5B__referrer%5D%5B%40extension%5D=Vcjobs\&tx_vcjobs_list%5B__referrer%5D%5B%40vendor%5D=Vcat\&tx_vcjobs_list%5B__referrer%5D%5B%40controller%5D=Job\&tx_vcjobs_list%5B__referrer%5D%5B%40action%5D=list\&tx_vcjobs_list%5B__referrer%5D%5Barguments%5D=YTo0OntzOjQ6InBhZ2UiO3M6MToiMiI7czo3OiJzb3J0aW5nIjtzOjI6Ii0yIjtzOjY6ImFjdGlvbiI7czo0OiJsaXN0IjtzOjEwOiJjb250cm9sbGVyIjtzOjM6IkpvYiI7fQ%3D%3D670c3eaad5e924154dbf52538ca3658265cbf326\&tx_vcjobs_list%5B__referrer%5D%5B%40request%5D=a%3A4%3A%7Bs%3A10%3A%22%40extension%22%3Bs%3A6%3A%22Vcjobs%22%3Bs%3A11%3A%22%40controller%22%3Bs%3A3%3A%22Job%22%3Bs%3A7%3A%22%40action%22%3Bs%3A4%3A%22list%22%3Bs%3A7%3A%22%40vendor%22%3Bs%3A4%3A%22Vcat%22%3B%7D4cbbc120c4035efe06954a6d67b4cbbf7035b0b3\&tx_vcjobs_list%5B__trustedProperties%5D=a%3A2%3A%7Bs%3A7%3A%22sorting%22%3Bi%3A1%3Bs%3A4%3A%22page%22%3Bi%3A1%3B%7D60079072975e19b342c9a063f9683617aec22104\&tx_vcjobs_list%5Bsorting%5D=-2\&tx_vcjobs_list%5Bpage%5D=) give details of vacancies where international specialists are explicitly sought. You can also carry out job searches on the [Federal Employment Agency website](https://con.arbeitsagentur.de/prod/jobboerse/jobsuche-ui/), in large employment exchanges like [Stepstone](https://www.stepstone.de/en/), [Indeed](https://de.indeed.com/) and [Monster](https://www.monster.de/) or among the vacancies published on business networks like LinkedIn or Xing. If you’re interested in specific companies, look for vacancies directly on their corporate websites.

## **Write an Application** <a href="#block-a82e32fadecb49aea527485c19d572f1" id="block-a82e32fadecb49aea527485c19d572f1"></a>

Normally, an application to a German company includes a covering letter, a CV with a photograph, certificates and testimonials. Make sure you have the required qualifications and emphasise them in your covering letter.

## **Apply for a Visa** <a href="#block-26be156ede5a453ca19c669cb4a9983a" id="block-26be156ede5a453ca19c669cb4a9983a"></a>

American citizens can enter Germany without a visa and remain for up to three months. If you want to work here, however, you will need to apply for a residence permit that allows you to take up gainful employment. You should only apply for one when you already have a contract of employment in Germany.

Make an appointment at the German Consulate in Atlanta and inform your future employer that it can take some time before all visa formalities are completed. If you have a higher education qualification that is recognized in Germany (e.g., B.A. or B.S. from KSU), you can receive a six-month visa to look for a job.

## **Obtain Insurance** <a href="#block-7923f731eef24204b03de4403f3d8ee7" id="block-7923f731eef24204b03de4403f3d8ee7"></a>

Health and personal liability insurances are mandatory in Germany, and that applies from the first day of your stay.

## Conclusion <a href="#block-bc7b73157d2e4c09aac7c4afa3faa62a" id="block-bc7b73157d2e4c09aac7c4afa3faa62a"></a>

# Letters of Recommendation

Instructions and support resources for students (who are requesting letters) and faculty (who are responding to requests).

<details>

<summary>Requesting Letters from Faculty</summary>

Occasionally, students require letters for graduate programs and applications to special opportunities. An effective letter of recommendation provides a portrait of who you are beyond your college grades or entrance exam scores. Admissions committees rely on letter of recommendations not only to validate what you have written in your application, but also to gather information about your personality, character, and motivation for your chosen field. Note: The guidance here replicates content from [Harvard FAS Career Services](https://ocs.fas.harvard.edu/letters-recommendation).

### Before Asking for a Letter <a href="#block-dcba7017594b403290920c52c1f97603" id="block-dcba7017594b403290920c52c1f97603"></a>

Before approaching faculty for letters of recommendation, reflect on how these letters can strengthen your application.

* List the qualities that the graduate program is looking for in an applicant. To get a sense of what an employer or graduate school is looking for in a candidate, think about who succeeds in the program or job you are seeking.
* Who can positively comment on these relevant personal qualities?
* If you need to provide several letters of recommendation, consider how each letter can fill different needs and request letters from individuals who know you in different contexts and can comment on different strengths.
* What would you like someone to include/address in the letter that may be missing in the rest of your application? Who can comment on your professional behavior? Your maturity? Did you take a particularly challenging sequence of courses that is not necessarily obvious from your transcript? Are there extenuating circumstances that might account for atypical grades?
* Decide whether you want to waive your right to see the letter of recommendation. For most employers and graduate programs, confidential letters have greater credibility and are assigned greater weight in the application process. Interestingly, many letter writers are less inhibited in praising an applicant when the letter is confidential!
* Allow plenty of “turnaround time.” Be sure the letter writer has the opportunity to write a thoughtful, complete letter without worrying about an unrealistic deadline.

### When Asking for a Letter <a href="#block-19bc47b972594d5ebaa1c1bd762e95c1" id="block-19bc47b972594d5ebaa1c1bd762e95c1"></a>

After deciding which individuals can provide the most positive and complete picture of your relevant skills, experiences, and character traits, communicate with each of the potential writers.

* Ask the letter writer if they feel comfortable writing a letter to support your application. If they seem hesitant or ambivalent, thank them for their time but do not request a letter from this individual. It is crucial that the person writing your letter is positive about your application and conveys that in their letter. If a letter is lukewarm or negative, it can reflect poorly on your ability to judge how you appear to others as well as give the employer or graduate program feedback that you did not intend to convey.
* The letter of recommendation will be especially effective if the writers describe specific examples and instances whenever possible. So, provide each letter writer with information relevant to your experience and application. This could be a resume, a personal statement, a reminder of particular incidents or discussions, etc. Spend some time discussing with the letter writer how this information relates to your application.

### After Asking for a Letter <a href="#block-22670385e67e49c5909efc4bcbf6e526" id="block-22670385e67e49c5909efc4bcbf6e526"></a>

Don't forget to thank the person writing your letter by sending a thank-you note! Let them know the outcome of your application! Not only could their letter make the difference in whether or not you are accepted, you most likely will want to ask for letters again in the future.

<summary>Responding to Requests for Letters</summary>

### Write Letters that Make a Difference <a href="#block-d9010bdea3b246f2aaf41ac9ab3ddf18" id="block-d9010bdea3b246f2aaf41ac9ab3ddf18"></a>

The guidelines are intended to enhance the letter-writing process by providing a general framework of best practices and relevant content for letter writers to follow. Student success takes many forms, and these letter-writing scaffolds are meant to support placement success. Before you start ensure that the student has consulted. Note: The guidance here replicates original content created by the [AAMC](https://www.aamc.org/system/files?file=2019-09%2Flettersguidelinesbrochure.pdf).

* Provide an accurate assessment of the applicant’s suitability for the given program rather than advocate for the applicant.
* Briefly explain your relationship with the applicant:
  * How long have you known the applicant?
  * In what capacity have you interacted (e.g., faculty, advisor, supervisor)?
  * Are your observations of the applicant direct or indirect?
  * Quality of information is more important than letter length.&#x20;
* Focus on the applicant rather than details of the lab, course, assignment, job, or institution
* Only include information on grades, GPA, ACTFL, or GRE scores *if* you also provide context to help interpret them. Grades, GPA, ACTFL, and GRE scores are available within the application.
* Focus on behaviors you have observed directly when describing an applicant’s suitability for graduate school. Consider describing:&#x20;
  * The situation or context of the behaviors.
  * The actual behaviors you observed.
  * Any consequences of the behaviors.
* Ask the applicant for permission if you plan to include any information that could be considered potentially private or sensitive.
* Consider including unique contributions that an applicant would bring to a graduate cohort:
  * Obstacles that the applicant had to overcome and how those obstacles have led to new learning and growth.
  * Contributions that an applicant would bring to a medical school’s diversity, broadly defined (e.g., background, attributes, experiences).
* Committees find comparison information helpful. If you make comparisons, be sure to provide context. Include information about the comparison group (e.g., students in a class you taught, students in your department, co-workers) and tour rationale for the comparison.

# Design Contest

Help Kennesaw German Studies design the perfect German club t-shirt and win a prize!

## Rules

1. **Prizes** - Students will vote on the best designs and the winners (as determined by total of unique votes) will receive free German Club apparel. First prize wins $100, second prize $50, and third prize $25.
2. **Eligibility** - All students may enter this competition. Entries will be considered valid for entry as long as they conform to the below standards and are created with the best interests of our German Club in mind.
3. **Standards** - To ensure that the design will attract the widest possible audience, the *German Club T-Shirt* should not be specific to Kennesaw, Kennesaw State, or the KSU German Club. Your design should appeal to learners of German, and members of German Clubs, regardless of location.
4. **Intellectual Property** The KSU German Club may not produce shirts with KSU's identity, so we must ask that your designs avoid Kennesaw references (for instance, no use of the name, owls, wings, or black/gold color patterns). Finally, artistic submissions to this contest will be attributed but become the intellectual property of KSU German Club.
5. **Submissions** - Students should submit their entries to the contest email address (Club Co-advisor: Dr. Goldblatt, <ngoldbla@kennesaw.edu>) as soon as they are complete. Include your name and contact information. Once the German Club finds that a sufficient number of entries qualify for voting, submissions will conclude and public voting will begin.

## Voting on Submissions

After sufficient time and entries we will host a voting session for these artworks and throw the next big design up on a shirt for German students around the world to enjoy! For now, we welcome your feedback on the submissions below.

# Summer Camp at KSU

“Sommer in der Stadt” is the motto for our 1-day German Summer Camp: Pull up a chair, enjoy the music, bask in the sun on the KSU campus, and make your own lyrics, poem, rap, or summer hit!

| Kennesaw State University has hosted an annual German Summer Day Camp in July for learners who completed approx. 2 years of high school level German. The event takes place on the Kennesaw Campus in the Social Science Building or Academic Learning Center Building from 8 am to 5 pm. The event hosts are the Department of World Languages and Cultures in the Norman J. First you will complete an information survey, and after you submit that you can provide payment via credit or debit card. |

# Stammtisch

The KSU German Club is proud to host periodic events at nearby restaurants so that German learners and community members can meet for a relaxing evening.

### What is a Stammtisch? <a href="#block-f6bc950010334da399e472d3c9ff9fd2" id="block-f6bc950010334da399e472d3c9ff9fd2"></a>

The German word *Stammtisch* means a table for regulars and such tables are typically held by informal groups on a regular basis. These groups often meet at a large table in a cozy location in a cafe, restaurant, or pub. The Stammtisch is above all a friendly get-together and informal!
